This was a great weekend to watch golf. Even though the U.S. PGA Tour may have ended for the year, the European Tour for 2011 was in full swing. Despite serious rain the South African Open was a spectacular show. Erine Els made an incredible ending shot to beat Retief Goosen by one in the final round. It was a great homecoming for the South African Native and also also his 5th time winning this tournament. The tournament was shortened to 17 holes for each of the final rounds, the fourth whole was deemed unplayable due to water damage. Friendly rivals Goosen and Els have played together since they were kids. It was a great tournament in general for the countrymen of South Africa who placed in the top four spots. Also a landmark year for the tournament, celebrating the 100th edition for this countries National Championship.
Looking ahead to next year ESPN has reported that out of the 13 players who have already qualified for the Masters through their world rankings only 2 American’s are on the list so far, Rickie Fowler and Sean O’Hair. Hopefully we will be able to see a few more Americans by the time the Masters are played in April. Players still have a chance to gain by getting into the top 50 a week before the tournament or winning a PGA Tour event that offers FedEx Cup points. Players we hope to see there are Phil Mickelson, last years defending champion and Tiger Woods who can maybe end his loosing streak and win another green jacket.
