It was a great weekend for the young rookie players on Tour. Brenden Steele made a very important PGA Tour victory at the Velaro Texas Open on only his 12th start on Tour. With Charl Schwartzel’s win last week this is the first time 2 rookies have won back to back weekends since 2002. It was also a great weekend for Matteo Manassero the 17 year old Italian who held a one shot victory over Gregory Bourdy at the Malaysian Open. Rory McIlroy was unable to keep his lead again and graciously accepted defeat for the second week in a row.
At the Velaro Texas Open it wasn’t just Kevin Na who was having a rough time the overall average of scores was the highest it has ever been at 73.665 and Steele’s final score of 280 was the highest winning score at the Texas Open since a 283 won in 1934. TPC San Antonio has been ranked as one of the hardest golf courses to play on Tour and 30 mph wind didn’t help the high averages of course. The rookies seemed to be able to weather the storm better than others as Kevin Chappell another rookie tied for second. What does this mean for the PGA Tour? just that they have a fantastic field of players who are able to step up and win tournaments against even the seasoned professionals.
