The Heritage Open is underway today as defending champion Jim Fuyrk takes on Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head, in South Carolina. After the green jacket comes the plaid jacket not quiet as coveted but definitely I sight to see. A lot of people are expecting big things from T2 finisher at the Masters Jason Day. The group to watch today will probably be Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, and Ernie Els all in the top 20 rankings. None of these players have exactly reached their potential on Tour yet this season. The favorite it seems is Luke Donald due to the nature of the course it takes a good iron player for these tough greens. This year has been dominated by the rookies who have found when to step their game up and how to stay calm under the pressure.
An interesting fact I learned researching this tournament was that it might not be around for long. This year it noticeably has no title sponsor a victim of bad timing and a bad economy in the PGA Tour. Having to borrow money this year from the county to make the estimated $8 million price tag for the tournament. Since this is my first year watching it will be interesting to see what it’s like to have a tournament with no big bakers helping sponsor it. Does anyone know of other tournaments (not majors) where this is the case?
